Our pop-up bar for Kids Company'

With the exception of the occasional food or community festival, outside catering isn’t something we usually do. But we were delighted to be able to lend a hand to our friends and neighbours at Kids Company when they asked if we could help them with the launch of their exhibition and research project, ‘Hungry Childhoods’, last night.

Food insecurity has a devastating impact on the lives of children and their families, and for this deeply thought-provoking exhibition, open to the public at the Kids Company Gallery from 3rd-11th October (excluding Sunday 5th), the charity gave some of the children they have helped the opportunity to express their relationship with food insecurity through art.

Hungry Childhoods includes sculpture, paintings, drawings and tapestry, as well as an interactive walk-through installation. Each piece is accompanied by quotes from the children involved, including at-times shocking excerpts from interviews with Kids Company’s counsellors.

We were delighted to provide a pop-up bar for the gala opening night, attended by press and supporters as well as researchers from the University of Reading who undertook the accompanying research project. Front-of-House team members Alex and Carlotta, assisted by Hannah and Hugh from our head office, ensured that no-one went thirsty, while some of Kids Company’s young people served canapés that they had made themselves – we tasted some and they were superb!

We’d like to thank Kids Company for involving us in the launch of Hungry Childhoods, and wish them every success with this incredible exhibition and there work tackling the issues that it so powerfully draws attention to.

HUNGRY CHILDHOODS is open to the public at the Kids Company Gallery, 38-40 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8NZ from Friday 3rd-Saturday 11th October (except Sunday 5th). Opening hours are Monday-Friday 1pm-7pm, Saturday 10am-6pm. Admission is free but donations to Kids Company are encouraged – you can also donate online.
