aqua shard first birthday cake for everybody!

Posted on July 2, 2014 by admin

To both celebrate our first birthday (we opened on 1st July 2013!) and to canvas expert opinions on our very special birthday cake, we invited some Very Important People for afternoon tea today – twenty-one nine- and ten-year-olds from Ben Jonson Primary School in Tower Hamlets.

In partnership with the wonderful charity Magic Breakfast, who are dedicated to making sure that no child starts the day hungry, we welcomed the children, along with teachers and volunteers from Magic Breakfast – to our exclusive private dining room which was theirs for the afternoon.

After admiring the view (and musing as to whether the Crystal Palace transmitting station was in fact the Eiffel Tower), the children sat down to a bumper spread of savoury sandwiches, mini lemon meringue pies and fresh fruit tarts and chocolate pudding with popping candy and edible chocolate pearls, with ‘Shard Sunrise’ mocktails to drink.

But the best was saved for last – as a grand finale, everyone was served an individual aqua shard first birthday cake, an edible replica of The Shard  made from layers of dark, milk and white chocolate mousse encased in a pear tuile. From the clean plates and big smiles, not to mention plenty of enthusiastic squealing, we’re confident that the cake was a hit – you can try it for yourself at lunch and dinner from now until the end of July.

The children from Ben Jonson had their own grand finale – they sang ‘Happy Birthday’ and gave three cheers for aqua shard, which are still ringing joyfully in our ears! It was one last example of the perfect behaviour the children showed throughout their visit; each and every one was a real credit to their school, their families and Magic Breakfast.

What nicer way could there be to celebrate?
